A wee detour

Well, who could have imagined that we would have been in Lake Simcoe, home of all my Sheppard ancestors and beloved cottage of my youth, when we received the news that my mum had experienced a stroke on July 2nd?? While the stroke was mild, this represented a crisis as Mum could no longer look after my Dad who has Alzheimer's Disease.

The remarkable coincidence of our location allowed us to easily travel with Lucy to Aurora. One week later they were in a gorgeous retirement home that my Mum had already selected for occupancy on September 1. We were able to accelerate their move and the home provided a one-night stay in their respite suite while we (movers, siblings, grandchildren) moved their furniture and belongings and hung all the paintings in 24 hours!!

Unfortunately, the fighter pilot in my Dad hasn't taken well to having his wings clipped. He has been exhibiting many of the troublesome behaviours not uncommon to those at his stage of the disease. I am lobbying hard for this old war hero to receive the treatment he deserves at Sunnybrook. He is deemed eligible and all the paperwork is in place (argh) but so far we are waiting to hear about the length of the wait list.

In the meantime we have been working with the family to clear out the house at Owl's Foot Crescent.....a daunting task!  We've had some fun in the process but there is much grieving in the background as we say goodbye to our parents' retirement home and our beloved golf course where we shared so many dog frolics over the years.

The cousins, Rachel and Sam, enjoy grandma's leather gloves and great-grandma's fur coat.

Brother Bob pleased to carry on the handyman tradition.

We also have bonus time with little Oscar....

And a wonderful family wedding in Niagara on the Lake on the long weekend, so our wee detour has been a blessing in disguise. We can be here for Mum and Dad and have great family time as a bonus.

Hoping to be back on Peapod in early August after the wedding, but taking one day at a time. Thank goodness for retirement!!!
